I am currently staring at a pair of expensive running shoes I bought three years ago. They have almost zero miles on them. I used to think I needed a gym membership and heavy metal gear to actually get in shape. I would sign up for a local gym in January, go exactly four times, and then spend the next six months feeling guilty about the monthly fee.
The Living Room Setup
I finally canceled my gym membership last year. Now I just work out in the small space between my couch and my television stand. I do not have room for dumbbells or a bench. I started buying cheap resistance bands online instead. I loop them around the wooden legs of my heavy sofa or shut them in the hallway door. Half the time I am just making up movements to see what feels right. I trip over the rug constantly.
What I Actually Do
I am not a personal trainer or a fitness model. I cannot do a single pull up and I still skip workouts when I am tired from work. I just write down which bands snap after a week and which ones actually last. I track the simple routines I can pull off in twenty minutes before I have to make dinner.
Keeping It Cheap
The fitness industry tries to sell a lot of complicated heavy equipment. I try to find ways to replicate those gym machines using a five dollar rubber tube. Sometimes it works perfectly. Sometimes the band snaps back and hits me in the shin. I document all of it here so you know what is actually worth buying and what is a complete waste of money.
