Living Room Routines

A Ten Minute Leg Workout Without Moving the Coffee Table

I have exactly four feet of empty floor space between my couch and my heavy wooden coffee table. Most home workout videos tell you to do walking lunges or wide jump squats. If I try to do a jump squat in my living room I will definitely hit my knee on the sharp edge of the table. I gave up on jumping entirely last winter.

Yesterday I needed to do a quick leg workout before I started cooking dinner. I just did static split squats instead. You do not have to move your feet around at all.

I stood in my tiny four foot gap and looped a heavy green resistance band under my front foot. I held the two ends of the rubber tube by my shoulders and just dropped my back knee straight down toward the rug. I did fifteen reps and then immediately switched legs. My thighs were completely exhausted by the third set.

I did not have to push the heavy coffee table out of the way to make room. I did not trip over the curled edge of the rug once. I did not even bump the television stand. If you have a cramped apartment you just have to stop walking around during your sets. Pick one spot on the floor and stay exactly there until the routine is over.
